The Brattleboro Food Co-op is Brattleboro’s answer to (and IMHO kicks the ass of ) Whole Foods Markets chain of stores and features an extraordinary selection of natural and organic foods from the region and around the world as well as an extensive selection of wines and beers, delicatessen and prepared foods to enjoy in a comfortable indoor/outdoor community cafe setting.
The Co-op was formed in 1975 as a small. community-owned buying club. Today, The Co-op has over 6.000 active shareholders! The Co-op’s facility is a 14,580 square foot natural foods market and deli on the ground floor of a four-story building that also includes Co-op offices, a commissary kitchen, a cooking classroom, and 24 apartments.
The Co-op’s recently built downtown anchor building is a result of a collaboration with the Windham and Windsor Housing Trust and Housing Vermont, with many environmentally friendly features, including utilizing refrigeration waste heat to heat apartments and the store, solar panels on the roof, and many more.
