Main Street Arts is thrilled to be producing Hedwig and the Angry Inch as part of its upcoming Great River Theater Festival.

Billed by Entertainment Weekly as “viciously funny, wildly innovative, and occasionally heartbreaking,” the rock musical by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask tells the story of transgender punk-rock singer Hedwig’s search for stardom and love while dealing with a botched sex-change operation as she tours the U.S. with her band.

“Hedwig is as timely as it gets in this day and age of fluid gender identity and the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots,” said MSA artistic director David Stern, who’s directing the production.

“It is a darkly funny and poignant work in the vein of some of our recent theatrical works, ranging from Bat Boy to last year’s Equus. We think it will appeal not only to the LGBTQ community, but also to those who value people for who they are as individuals, not what they are labeled.”

MSA is staging the work Friday, July 5th and 12th at 7:30 p.m., Saturday 6th and 13th at 7 and 9 p.m. and Sunday, July 7th at 7 p.m.

“It’s a show about accepting who you are, and applies to all people everywhere”, Stern declares.

Branded “the best rock musical ever!” by Rolling Stone Magazine, the racy musical fable is the winner of four 2014 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival. It played to record-breaking sell-out crowds on Broadway, with Neil Patrick Harris in the lead, and has been produced around the world.

Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for seniors. There is also a festival pass that includes unlimited access to all 4 other productions as well! Further information is available on the MSA website at mainstreetarts.org or by calling MSA at (802) 869-2960
